The European Commission has launched the DIGITAL-2026-AI-PILOTING-10-SCREENING call, funded under the Digital Europe Programme, to support the development and testing of Artificial Intelligence systems for medical image analysis. The available budget is €9 million. The main objectives include: improving efficiency in detection and diagnostic workflows; supporting the prioritization of critical cases; reducing pressure on radiology services; and contributing to more equitable access to screening services, including in underserved regions.

The projects will focus on imaging data such as MRI, CT, X-ray, PET, and ultrasound. AI/GenAI algorithms are an important tool for diagnosing and identifying suspected cases of diseases requiring specialized follow-up. This approach can significantly reduce healthcare and care costs and, above all, reduce inequalities in access to care, addressing staff shortages in remote areas and accelerating diagnosis and decision-making regarding treatment options.

To be eligible, applicants (beneficiaries and affiliated entities) must:

• be legal entities (public or private entities);
• be established in one of the eligible countries (EU and non-EU countries, as better specified in the notice).

The medical centers participating in the initiative will join the European network of advanced AI-based screening centers, ensuring the dissemination of collected data to implement peer learning and the dissemination of best practices. The proposals will build on existing European infrastructures, including Cancer Image Europe and HealthData@EU, to strengthen collaboration and accelerate the adoption of AI in healthcare across Europe.
