A campaign designed to counter fake news about climate change and strengthen citizens' ability to recognize reliable information on the topic. #ClimateFactsMatter is the answer of the European Commission to climate disinformation, one of the main challenges for European societies today.

Climate change is perceived as a priority: 85% of Europeans consider it a serious problem, yet many struggle to distinguish between accurate information and misleading content, especially on social media. This occurs especially during major global events and environmental disasters, contributing to confusion and slowing the adoption of sustainable behaviors. This phenomenon can directly impact citizens' support for environmental policies and the ecological transition.

In summary, the campaign's objectives are: countering climate misinformation; promoting accurate information on climate change; and supporting informed decisions by citizens. The strategy is based on three key principles:

  • Be Aware – Raise awareness of climate misinformation and develop critical thinking.
  • Be Prepared – Provide practical tools to recognize manipulation techniques.
  • Be Informed – Learn more about the main topics affected by climate fake news.

The campaign is aimed specifically at adults between 30 and 40—from all European Union countries, with a specific focus on Italy, among others—who are aware of the issue of climate change but don't always feel actively involved. It invites citizens and organizations to always verify sources, share reliable information, avoid disseminating content of dubious origin, and develop digital and environmental education skills. To do so, the official website and social media channels will provide tools to identify fake news about climate change and learn more about European sustainability policies.

In particular, a short series of events promoted by the European Climate Pact will help shed light on doubts and questions: it will be possible to participate in the webinars organised ad hoc by the EU Climate Action Academy here . The meetings are scheduled in particular on May 19 (from 12:30 to 14:00) – 'Navigating climate disinformation and the role of social media' – and on June 16 (from 12:15 to 13:00 CEST), an in-depth session on climate disinformation – 'Unmasking climate disinformation: a practical approach'.
