My name is Patrícia, I am 31 years old and I am from Portugal. I have just returned from one of the most enriching international experiences of my life. I spent 6 incredible months in Sicily, where I volunteered through the European Solidarity Corps at the association I Girasoli Onlus.
I decided to join the program during my gap year because I wanted to try different work experiences, immerse myself in new cultures and improve my language skills.
During my experience, I lived in the small town of Riesi, a place very different from the traditional tourist destinations of the island, but which welcomed me with open arms. I met wonderful people who made me feel immediately like family.
In addition to challenging myself to learn and adapt to the Italian culture and language, I have had the privilege of working with migrants and refugees, broadening my worldview.
What I like most about the program ESC It is the opportunity to try new things, within the association I have worked with different groups: unaccompanied minors, adults and families. I have held technology courses, helped with Italian, organized intercultural and recreational afternoons, provided school support and provided assistance in the field of job placement.
An unforgettable experience was participating, together with some members of the association, in a summer competition that involved 400 young people in the city.
Another highlight was designing and helping to organize a European Solidarity Corps volunteering team where I hosted and supported the guidance of volunteers for two weeks. I learned about anti-mafia policies, helped paint murals on land confiscated from the mafia, and organized activities in other migrant centers on the island. The project culminated in a conference, organized with the help of volunteers, to promote international opportunities such as the European Solidarity Corps.
Besides work, I enjoyed the summer in Sicily, experiencing the traditions, local festivals and crystal clear beaches.
Saying goodbye was difficult, but I take with me the certainty that every moment was worth it and that I have grown and evolved both personally and professionally. The program ESC It is a unique and precious opportunity that I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone.
