The second team volunteering at the Institute for the Blind in Palermo, carried out as part of the HeSo project, has just concludedESC, funded by the European Union.

The boys and girls who participated had numerous experiences whose common thread was support for fragility. The theater activities carried out with the users of the Institute, the distribution of meals to the homeless, the mutual comparison were a constant of the days together.

The volunteers describe them like this:

“My name is Aymane, I am 25 years old and I am a boy who participated in the volunteer project organized by Informa Giovani at the institute for the blind in Palermo.

The reasons why I chose this volunteering experience are many, but perhaps the one that attracted me the most was that I wanted to try the experience of working with people who have something in common with me, namely a disability.
I say this because I have a back problem that creates countless problems and limitations for me, and which in recent months has pushed me to make countless changes in my lifestyle and way of thinking.
And among the changes in thinking, there has also been an increase in awareness of all disabilities, and this has pushed me to start trying to better understand the issues and stories of people with disabilities of all kinds.
Once I started volunteering, I definitely achieved my goal, which was to observe and listen to the stories that people with visual impairments had to tell.
But beyond that, I also got something more that I didn't expect.
Seeing people with disabilities older than mine moving forward with strength and enthusiasm made me reconsider my situation and gave me more tools to deal with the difficulties that my disability poses to me on a daily basis.”

“About the street unit activity, I felt happy and sad at the same time. I saw human beings like me and you sleeping on the streets in this cold weather without having a home or adequate blankets to cover themselves, this was the sad part, the happy part was the possibility of providing them with water and food, basic goods for a human being. It was incredible to see the work of support for these people in centers like San Francesco”
