It was officially launched by the European Committee of the Regions and the European Commission in all 27 EU countries the new Network of European local councillors, which already has three thousand participants. The new network aims to bring the European Union closer to local communities, involving mayors, regional presidents and regional and local councilors more directly.
Membership of the network is open to local or regional politicians from across the EU.
The Network offers the councilors:
- access to up-to-date EU information and materials on policies and initiatives to share at local level;
- training and capacity building with the opportunity to undertake study visits to Brussels, training sessions and seminars to improve understanding of the functioning and procedures of the EU and communication;
- networking opportunities – Counsellors can connect with their counterparts across the EU to share experiences, good practices and collaborate on solutions to common challenges;
- support for communication actions on the ground with support in the organisation of local events, as well as in the development of communication initiatives aimed at informing citizens about the EU and encouraging their involvement.
