From June 20, 2025 all electronic devices such as tablets and smartphones will have to be provided with a special label that certifies their energy efficiency and other characteristics. The manufacturing companies will have to ensure certain standards to guarantee greater durability of the products, such as battery life, availability of spare parts, resistance in the event of falls, scratches and contact with water, ease of repair in the event of failures and the guarantee that the batteries maintain at least 80% of their capacity after 800 charging cycles.
The label introduced by the European Commission It is based on the style of those already existing for other devices and will contain a classification of the energy efficiency of products with a score ranging from A (the highest level) to G (the lowest). It will be mandatory for smartphones that use cellular or satellite networks, cordless phones for home use, feature phones (cell phones that can only make calls and send SMS, without access to the Internet) and tablets with a screen size between 7 and 17,4 inches.
The aim of the initiative is to help make the so-called 'right to repair' a reality, that is, the possibility for each individual to provide for the replacement/repair of any defective parts of their devices without necessarily having to resort to professionals indicated by the companies that sell them. Today, many smartphones are replaced after a few years not because they are broken, but because they become slow, no longer receive updates or have damage - such as an unusable battery - whose repair involves excessive costs or requires resorting to the services offered by the manufacturers.
However, the labels will not have to be affixed to smartphones and tablets with flexible screens, the so-called tablet computers (those to which a keyboard can be connected and which use an operating system similar to that of a computer, such as Windows) and to products that were already on sale on the Union market before 20 June 2025.
