The European research report entitled “Literature review and field research on good practices from partner countries”, an integral part of the project “Youth sPEACEs” funded by Erasmus+, addresses the issue of the alleged low participation of young people. This issue, which was clearly evident during the 2019 European elections with a youth turnout ranging between 42% and 47%, raises questions about the vitality of democratic participation of young people in the EU. However, contrary to the common perception of widespread apathy, the report reveals a dynamic reality of unconventional youth engagement, which challenges the traditional idea of participation limited exclusively to electoral tools.

Through an in-depth analysis, based on various research methodologies including surveys and focus groups, the study explores the preferences of young Europeans in terms of civic involvement, highlighting a strong predilection for forms of informal participation. The findings highlight young people's desire for inclusive and welcoming spaces, while revealing a number of successful initiatives spread across several European countries, such as Italy, France, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and the Republic of North Macedonia. These initiatives demonstrate how places dedicated to young people can act as engines for active citizenship, creativity and a sense of belonging to the community.

Furthermore, the report highlights the fundamental role of grassroots organizations and the need to provide accessible information, in order to broaden participation beyond conventional forms. The positive impact such spaces can have on young people's personal and social development is also highlighted, highlighting their importance as platforms for learning, upskilling and engagement in society.

As the project moves towards the creation of a European Youth Spaces Charter, the data and insights gleaned from this research prove invaluable. This future Charter aims to provide a robust regulatory framework for promoting youth spaces across Europe, ensuring that they are inclusive, accessible and responsive to young people's needs. This initiative invites all stakeholders, including policy makers and youth workers, to contribute to creating a future in which places dedicated to young people are recognized as essential for cultivating active, responsible and participatory citizens in a more inclusive European society.
