![]() The 11th of February marks the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In order to encourage more girls to pursue science or any kind of higher education, we wish to remind you of Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.” In many countries, there is still a stigma of women pursuing any kind of education. In Afghanistan, girls are frequently attacked on their way to school, they receive death threats and get acid thrown in their face. In Nepal, the ratio of boys to girls in school is 2:1 and education for boys is more important than education for girls. Some countries where girls don't go to school. Art 26. 2 “Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.” The accessibility to education is not one to be taken for granted. Gender biases must be broken by encouraging more girls to go into education so the bright minds of the future will not be lost to sexism and ancient traditions. Said that, we would like to promote the UNESCO-manifesto aiming at improving women’s access to science at all levels and in all disciplines. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights The poster below is part of a campaign raised during the international project "IntercultuReality " which involved young people from different EU countries in several activities related to Human Rights and its awareness. Realizing that HR are not well known and recognized as it should, they created different posters based on some of the articles of the Declaration, in order to sensitize more people about Human Rights and the current reality. For the following months, we are going to show these posters to support the campaign. For more information about the project visit IntercultuRealityblog Comments are closed.
