My name is Mariem Belaaroussi, I am 29 years old and I come from Beejad, Morocco.
I participated in a short term volunteering project of the European Solidarity Corps in Italy, lasting 42 days, with Kalistratia as the host organization and InformaGiovani as a lead organization.
I decided to volunteer abroad to step out of my comfort zone and contribute to a cause close to my heart. As a young Moroccan woman, I saw this experience as a unique opportunity to acquire new skills, immerse myself in a different culture, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. This experience was not only a way to give back, but also an opportunity for personal growth, to challenge my preconceived ideas, and to broaden my worldview. I wanted to learn how to collaborate with an international team, adapt to new environments, and develop a sense of global citizenship.
During the volunteer project ESCMy main activities have been environmental conservation and community engagement. My most significant contribution was helping organize the fourth edition of the "Kalabria Eco Festival." It was a large project that involved many aspects, from setting up the stalls to managing the flow of the event. I also had the joy of participating in a summer camp with the children, where we taught them about sustainability through fun and hands-on activities. My favorite part was seeing their faces light up.
The best moments have been the result of our collective creative efforts. One of the most special memories I've taken home was when we painted the stairs for the community. It was a group effort that transformed a simple public space into a vibrant work of art. It was incredibly rewarding to see the immediate positive impact of our collective efforts and to know that we left a lasting mark on the community. These memories of laughter, teamwork, and beautiful shared spaces are something I will cherish forever.

Naturally, there were some challenges. The initial language barrier was a challenge, as I had to learn to communicate effectively with people who didn't speak my native language. I overcame this difficulty by actively participating in group activities, using good body language, and being patient with myself and others. Using translation apps and learning a few key phrases helped me bridge the gap. Another challenge was adapting to a culture different from my own. My integration occurred gradually, and I appreciated the respect shown for my personal time. This challenge strengthened my patience and ability to adapt, teaching me that cultural differences can be overcome with mutual understanding and respect.
I would definitely recommend volunteering. ESC to other young people. It's more than just a project. It's a transformative experience. It pushes you to become more independent, resilient, and adaptable. The skills gained from intercultural communication are invaluable for both your personal and professional lives. Furthermore, it's an opportunity to build a global network of friends and collaborators who share a common purpose, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
