La European Commission has launched a public consultation to prepare a proposal on the European Social Security Passport (ESSPASS), which is part of the package on fair mobility for workers, to be adopted in autumn 2026.
ESSPASS aims to consolidate aspects such as:
- the digitalisation of the process of requesting and receiving legal documents, i.e. 'portable documents', such as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC);
- Real-time verification. ESSPASS will introduce real-time systems to quickly verify across borders whether digital documents are valid or have been modified.
ESSPASS aims to help people moving or working in different EU countries exercise their social security rights. It has adopted a digital solution for the secure and rapid verification of social security documents, reducing bureaucratic procedures for workers, businesses, and national authorities, while also reducing the risk of fraud.
