Through the 'Internet Freedom Fund, Open Technology Fund (OTF) – a non-profit organization founded in 2012 in Washington that aims to promote freedom of expression and human rights – aims to promote inclusive and safe access to global communications systems, to ensure online freedom, especially for at-risk users.
Projects should address areas such as technology development: innovative, accessible, and open prototypes, as well as the implementation and development of tools and infrastructure for internet freedom and to support human rights communities; applied research: actions that can track how, why, or where censorship occurs or assess threats to internet freedom in a specific geographic context; support for digital security; and community participation.
Organizations—both nonprofit and for-profit—and individuals from around the world can apply for funding. Funding requests range from a minimum of $10 to a maximum of $900.000.
Applications are open on a rolling basis every two months (i.e., January 1st, March 1st, May 1st, July 1st, September 1st, and November 1st).
The process involves two steps. Applications must be submitted by providing essential information with a concept note through the dedicated online platform.
