The new rules standardize the definition of crimes such as embezzlement, influence peddling, and illicit enrichment, establishing minimum criminal penalties for individuals and businesses. They also introduce adequate statutes of limitations to facilitate proceedings and stronger investigative tools for law enforcement authorities.
As underlined by Commissioners Virkkunen and McGrath, the corruption it is not a “victimless crime”: It diverts public resources and distorts competition. This directive reaffirms the Commission's commitment (priority 2024-2029) to severely punish those who betray citizens' trust. The initiative is part of a broader plan that includes a public consultation open until July 6.
