The European Union has published a report on the implementation of the Action Plan on Gender Equality (GAP III) for 2021-2022, highlighting tangible progress and the persistence of significant challenges. The plan, part of the “Global Gateway” initiative, aims to promote gender equality and women's empowerment, in line with the United Nations' sustainable development goal.

With an investment of €22,4 billion in gender equality projects, the EU has seen improvements in women's protection against violence, participation in the public sphere and access to education and economic independence. However, the report recognizes that in many parts of the world women's rights continue to go unprotected, thus accentuating their vulnerable condition.

In response to the difficulties that still hinder gender equality, the EU has decided to extend the action plan until 2027. Furthermore, EU funding for gender equality has seen an increase from 9 to 13 billion euros in a year, with the topic included in political dialogues with around 100 nations. However, only 33 of these focused exclusively on gender equality.

The report also highlights EU action in UN initiatives and support for women's organisations, but underlines that significant challenges remain. In conclusion, the EU GAP III proves to be an important step towards gender equality, but it is also a clear reminder that the road to real equality is still long and full of obstacles.
